Chapter 6
Braelin’s phone rang while she was closing up the shop. Figuring it was her mother asking for something from the supermarket, she picked up immediately.
“Hello?” she asked.
“Braelin? It’s me, Simon.”
How did he get my phone number? She thought to herself.
“I hope you don’t mind but I got your number from Lacey. I was wondering if you were busy tonight? Would you maybe want to grab a drink with me at the bar?”
“Why don’t you ask your fiancé?” she asked.
“Well, she’s busy. And you were pretty angry the other night—I want to make it up to you. Friends don’t stay mad at each other Braelin,” he said softly, hoping to jolt her out of her mood.
She leaned against the counter, folding her hands across her chest. Thankfully, Simon couldn’t see her. Again her cheeks felt flushed. Friends? But I don’t want to be your friend. And you have a fiancé.
“Hello? Braelin? You’re pretty cute when you’re angry,” he teased.
“Excuse me?”
“Look up.”
She did, and noticed Simon was standing across the street, waving at her. An enormous yellow taxi passed between them and she chose that moment to scowl. They’d parted ways the other night in the elevator, and Braelin had been pretty sure that Simon wanted to kiss her. Right as they’d turned towards each other to bid their farewells, they found each other face-to-face.
“Um, thank you for inviting me out,” she’d said.
“Any time,” he responded, his crystalline eyes unwavering on hers.
She was torn between the attention he was giving her and the fact that he was engaged to be married.
She was also frustrated about the shop. She’d taken so much time off from working for Mimi that she’d lost her job there. While she had been upset, she realized this was really her chance for a fresh start in LA. Mimi still wanted to open another business there and she wanted Braelin to run the company as well as start her own line. All the connections were there in LA for her. She told herself over and over again that things could have been worse, but the message just wasn’t getting through. Still, she wasn’t needed in LA for a few months yet which meant she had no income coming in and she was angry about that. Part of her wanted to storm into Mimi’s office to confront her, and explain the situation with her mother was still ongoing but that would mess up her future job in LA. The other part of her, the stronger, more dominant part, walked away with dignity although she thought Mimi should have paid her two month’ salary to help her pay her rent these next two months.
If Lacey didn’t buy the bridal shop soon, her mother would have to apply for disability. And if she didn’t get that—she’d file for bankruptcy. She told Braelin that since her father had left, it had been more and more difficult to pay the bills. Braelin’s father was still sleeping at her apartment, monopolizing her time. He needed to go back to the house to help her mother out.
